Orpheus by Claudio Monteverdi

21 September 2024

The opera "Orfeo" by Claudio Monteverdi (Italian: Orfeo, Claudio Monteverdi), dates back to 1607 and is considered a work that marks the transition from the Renaissance proper to the musical world of the Baroque. A music shaped by the rich use of polyphony and the introduction of new instruments and sounds.

PLOT
In a bucolic environment, the newlyweds, Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice, live happily. Their carefree life is dramatically turned upside down with the sudden death of Eurydice and Orpheus' despair. The hero travels to the Underworld to bring her back. Unfortunately, however, despite his promise to the gods, he turns back to look at her and she returns to the Underworld forever. However, the god Apollo, as a god from a machine, brings Orpheus to Paradise near Eurydice. Thus the couple is united again and forever.
